The Story Behind the Image

I was completely captivated by this enormous fallen tree deep in the Valley of the Giants at Walpole. Even lying on its side, the stump stood as tall as me — which, while not especially impressive for a person, makes for a truly remarkable tree. It also represented an extraordinary amount of potential firewood, had the landowners felt the impulse.

What fascinated me most was the texture of the broken timber: splintered, weathered, and rich with detail. Sunlight filtered through the forest canopy, casting bright spots across the jagged interior and emphasising the deep shadows within. On larger canvases, these contrasts become even more dramatic, turning the hollowed core into a natural sculpture of light and darkness.
